Everything You Need to Know

Transit times from Ningbo vary by destination: Southeast Asia (Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City) 6-10 days; Middle East (Jebel Ali, Mumbai) 12-18 days; Europe (Rotterdam, Hamburg, Felixstowe) 28-36 days; Americas (Los Angeles direct 14-18 days, New York via Panama 25-32 days); Africa (Mombasa, Durban, Lagos) 22-35 days; Oceania (Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland) 12-18 days. Total door-to-door lead time adds 5-10 days for customs clearance and inland trucking at each end.

FCL (Full Container Load) is more economical when your cargo fills at least 13-15 CBM (roughly half a 20GP container). You get exclusive use of the container, lower damage risk, and faster transit since there is no CFS handling at destination. LCL (Less-than-Container Load) consolidation is better for smaller shipments under 10 CBM — you pay per cubic meter or per weight (whichever is greater). LCL is ideal for samples, trial orders, or when your supplier ships small batches. As a rule of thumb: if your cargo exceeds 15 CBM or 10 tonnes, FCL almost always wins on cost and speed.

Standard dry containers: 20GP (33 CBM, ~28 tonnes payload), 40GP (67 CBM), 40HQ (76 CBM, high-cube with extra height), and 45HQ (86 CBM). Specialized equipment includes: Open Top (OT) for over-height cargo loaded by crane; Flat Rack (FR) for oversized machinery and heavy-lift items; Reefer (RF) with temperature control from -30°C to +30°C for perishables, pharma, and sensitive goods; and ISO tank containers for bulk liquids, chemicals, and food-grade products. We also arrange platform containers and break-bulk for project cargo.

These are Incoterms 2020 trade terms defining who pays for what in international shipping:

• FOB (Free On Board): The seller delivers goods on board the vessel at the named port (e.g., FOB Ningbo). The buyer pays ocean freight and handles import. Most common for China exports.
• CIF (Cost, Insurance & Freight): The seller pays freight and insurance to the destination port. The buyer handles import clearance and onward delivery.
• EXW (Ex Works): The buyer picks up goods at the seller's factory and manages the entire logistics chain. We can handle everything for you under EXW.
• DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): The seller covers all costs including import duties and taxes right to the buyer's door — a full door-to-door service.

The standard document set for importing from China includes:

• Commercial Invoice — stating value, terms, and HS code
• Packing List — detailing quantities, weights, dimensions
• Bill of Lading (sea) or Air Waybill (air) — the transport document and title
• Certificate of Origin (CO) — proves goods were made in China, required for preferential tariff treatment under FTAs
• Customs Declaration Form — filed by your broker at destination

Depending on the commodity, you may also need: Inspection Certificates (SGS, Bureau Veritas), Fumigation Certificate (for wood packaging under ISPM-15), FDA registration (food, medical devices to USA), CE Declaration (for EU), or REACH compliance documentation. We guide you through the exact requirements for your destination country and product type.

For standard general-trade exports with complete documentation, Ningbo customs clearance typically takes 1-2 working days from submission. If the shipment is selected for physical inspection (roughly 5-10% of declarations), add 1-3 additional days for inspector scheduling and examination. Factors that can delay clearance: incomplete or inconsistent documents, missing export licenses for controlled commodities, commodity inspection requirements (e.g., ceramics, toys, electronics), or discrepancies between declared value and customs valuation. We pre-clear documents and use the Single Window system to submit declarations electronically, minimizing hold-ups.

A Certificate of Origin (CO) is an official document certifying that goods were manufactured in a specific country. There are two types:

• Non-preferential CO — issued by CCPIT, required by some importing countries for trade statistics and sanctions compliance
• Preferential CO — such as Form E (ASEAN-China FTA), Form A (GSP), RCEP Certificate, or bilateral FTA certificates, which allow goods to qualify for reduced or zero import tariffs

Whether you need one depends on your destination country and product. For example, Form E can reduce import duty to 0% for many goods entering ASEAN countries. We handle CO application and authentication on your behalf.

HS (Harmonized System) codes are standardized 6-10 digit numbers used globally to classify traded products. Every item you import or export must have an HS code, which determines: the applicable import duty rate, VAT/GST rate, whether a license or permit is required, any anti-dumping duties or trade remedies, and eligibility for FTA preferential tariffs. Misclassification can lead to overpaying duties, customs penalties, or shipment seizure. China uses a 10-digit HS code system (based on the international 6-digit HS). Our customs brokers review your product specifications, materials, and function to assign the correct HS code, potentially saving you significant duty costs through legal classification optimization.

To provide an accurate freight quote, we need:

• Origin and destination — factory address or port, and final delivery address
• Cargo details — commodity name, total gross weight, total volume (CBM), number and dimensions of packages
• Preferred Incoterm (FOB, EXW, CIF, DDP, etc.)
• Preferred mode (sea, air, express, or multimodal)
• Cargo ready date and any deadline
• Special requirements — temperature control, dangerous goods, oversized, high value

Premium rates typically range from 0.03%-0.15% of the insured value (CIF value + 10% is standard). We strongly recommend insurance for all shipments — carrier liability under the Hague-Visby Rules is limited to approximately USD 666 per package or USD 2 per kg, far below the actual value of most cargo. We can add insurance to any quote at cost.
